Chattahoochee Rising: A Photographic Essay

After a three-year hiatus from photographing, we are pleased to present a new portfolio by Bruce A. Edelstein. "Chattahoochee Rising: A Photographic Essay" was created in the fall of 2009 in the midst of Georgia's extensive flooding. Dr. Edelstein felt that if he could "attempt to find some peace and beauty" in the midst of the raging waters, then perhaps he could help to "shed a healing light onto so many who suffered and lost so much."

In order to create these images, Dr. Edelstein utilized a Croatian-made infrared film that required exposure times of up to 2 minutes. Therefore, the constant storms that occurred throughout Dr. Edelstein's sessions are not evident in the images, as raindrops became invisible during the exceptionally slow process. In addition, the river moved so rapidly that the reflections seen on the surface of the water were undetectable until Dr. Edelstein printed the images in his darkroom.

The conditions under which the artist created this portfolio were less than ideal however, they were incidental compared to the devastation endured by so many within the community. Bruce A. Edelstein humbly offers his interpretation of "the floods", along with his fervent wish for "the clouds to lift" and for 2010 to bring "many brighter days."
